Roger McGough

CBE, FRSL (1937 - )

 

An English poet, performance poet, broadcaster, children’s author and playwright, Roger McGough presents Poetry Please for BBC Radio 4,  as well as performing his own poetry.  Roger was one of the leading members of the Liverpool poets a group of young poets influenced by beat poetry and the popular music and culture of 1960s.  He is an honorary fellow of Liverpool John Moores University, fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and President of the Poetry Society.  

 

Roger, with fellow poets Brian Patten (1946 -) and Adrian Henry (1932 - 2000), came to national prominence through the publication of The Mersey Sound  in 1967.  It went on to sell over 500,000 copies, becoming one of the best selling poetry anthologies of all time; remaining in continuous publication.  Three plays written by the 17th century French playwright, Moliere, ‘Tartuffe’, ‘The Hypochondriac’ (The Imaginary Invalid) and ‘The Misanthrope’,  have been translated by Roger McGough in recent years. 

 

Roger is also a gifted and patient tutor and an inspirational workshop leader.  His extraordinary talent as a wordsmith, combined with wit and wisdom will ensure that this course gives you everything you could wish for in a writing workshop and much, much more.
