Of mists and mellow fruitfulness...

A unique poetry workshop in the heart of rural France

We wanted all of our poets to enjoy the week and to help to discover latent lyricists or kick-start a new phase of verse for the more experienced. The exercises were inspirational helping us to work together and to explore our own inner muse. Some interesting and fun verse found its way into our busy notebooks and we shared our endeavours before breaking for tasty soups and salads at lunchtime. In the afternoon some of us withdrew quietly into our own little poetic world.

Others explored the town and even made the most of pavement cafes and a world-famous chocalatier immediately opposite the house. The evenings were spent in more celebration of French and World cuisine, all created by our very-English, yet nonetheless excellent chef, Pip and served by the lovely Lauren and yours truly.  Much wine was also enjoyed before gathering before the fire to hear musician Nick on the piano and enjoy a good-old sing-along.

Mid-week Roger treated us to a reading of his latest work for children. If we needed further inspiration to get down to work, this was it. Roger’s work, as ever insightful and entertaining, served as a reminder of what we were there for. To celebrate poetry.

On the final evening we donned our finerey and gathered before the grand piano to share our work, existing and new.  This was a truly entertaining evening that showcased a room full of talent, some unexpected, some every bit as good as we anticipated.  And as a bonus Dean performed a vignette of one of Alan Bennet's 'Talking Heads'.  We parted the following day with new freindships forged and a new vigour for verse.  Thank you once again Roger for such patient and inspirational leadership.
